Beach Metal Detecting After a Storm: A Silver Knife and an 18K Gold Ring

After a storm rolled through, I wondered what the shifting sand might reveal. As soon as the weather cleared, I headed back to the beach with my metal detector. I was hoping for a good find, but I had no idea what was waiting there.

On that first outing, I uncovered an old knife made of sterling silver with an ivory handle. What surprised me most was its condition. Despite its age, the blade was still sharp and the knife looked almost pristine. It was the sort of discovery that makes you pause and wonder how it ended up beneath the sand.

I kept thinking about that stretch of beach, so I waited for the tides to shift and returned to search it again. This time, I uncovered something completely different: a large 18-karat gold horseshoe ring set with diamonds.

The ring stood out immediately. Its size, sparkle and unusual horseshoe design made it one of those finds I knew I would remember. Finding the knife had already made the first trip worthwhile; discovering the ring on my return made the experience even more remarkable.

One storm and two trips to the beach brought two very different treasures. That is what keeps me coming back to beach metal detecting. You can search a familiar place, then return after the weather and tides have changed and find something you never expected.
