Saturday, June 4, turned out to be a beautiful day, not only for the great weather. I finally broke through the 1800 barrier and found this 1775 King George III half penny on property that I had hit pretty hard over the last few years but obviously had missed with the Bounty Hunter Land Star.
The property is slated for residential development and a neighbor had told me that an engineering firm had recently drilled three holes around the property to test for and measure the water table below. I decided to hit the first hole about 30 feet away from the main building which dates from 1906, per city tax accessor records.
I was working the stock pro 11" coil slowly across the filled in hole when I heard and saw a clear 37 TID reading. At about 4 inches I recovered a 1937 wheat penny saying to myself that there may be some silver to be coaxed from this area. A moment later I see TID bouncing between between 36-37 but the tone sounded a little higher, like a barber or merc dime.
I dug down about 8-9 inches after using the pin point mode and when holding the target I thought it was a slug or a washer about quarter size, but when I brushed some soil away, I saw the patina and waited until I got home to clean it. I had no idea what I had found and when researching colonial coins I did not see a match.
