Hammydigger finds gold

14 Jul 2014

Four Quarters finds its first gold coin. It was Sunday July 6th . I awoke at 6.00 to A beautiful sunny day. I loaded my little van up with the usual stuff boots, detector, flask of tea. I was ready to go. Our fourth ever rally. A good turnout with 60 members all chatting and raring to go. We heard the usual rumours of Roman goodies being found on the 16 acre field across the road. Everyone shot off in the same direction. Forty members stampeding through the gate with the sound of detectors bleeping and singing. I decided to sprint off to the other end of the field to get a bit of space. Two minutes later into the dig and with the initial stampede starting to clear i hear A big scream of delight. Gold coin. Gold coin. Only 20yds into the field and right next to where I was walking. It was Hammydigger mike, Jumping with joy. It's Queen Anne. The crowd of nearby members gathered around . About 40 members all wanting to see the beauty. In Immaculate condition 1714. It gave us all inspirations for the rest of the day. Everyone all excited hoping to find another gold coin nearby but it wasn't to happen. We did however find Plenty of silver coins with George and William bullheads appearing all around. A few roman bronzes also turning up and about 5 hammered with one extremely nice and very small Charles 1st. No surprise then that Hammydigger Mike won our rally coin of the day. Not bad for a club only been running for one month. It just shows that you never know what you might find. Mart - UK
