Hunted out beaches

10 Apr 2018

Well, as I am sure most of you know, metal detecting and where I stay especially beach metal detecting, has become very competitive. To the point where you really just want to pull yourself out of the main stream and just disappear, only coming out at midnight when no one can see you. Hitting those special spots that you know. This is not just a story but a bit of hope to all those detectorists that see so many guys “cleaning out “the beaches day in and day out. I see them every day on my way to work and on my way home, those spots that I so meticulously looked for. The ones that gave me so many good old gold rings, hammered to death. Ironically detecting is a bit of all those things in life that make you happy. The highs and the low’s the good and the bad. Without a doubt in my mind, the successful detectorist is the one who really takes it in his stride and adapts and more often than not, go back to basics. Here I am at my favourite beach looking at the cuts, the low spots and wondering how many times this section has been hit in the last day. So I decided to go for a walk, from end to end on my favourite beach. As the tide is moving out I quickly notice a light gravel spot opening far away from where everyone swims. At that point I could also see that the tide is pulling in that direction something I did not notice before. Got my detector and headed out, nobody detecting even remotely close to me. The coins started coming and not one pulltab until… oh no. the dreaded pulltab signal. 18 I always say I love digging them but I really don’t, they are ugly little beasties and my trusty Minelab detectors sniff them out very deep. This one was shallow. My eyes popped as I kicked the sand over. 6 grams 18 ct white gold with a half a carat diamond, not to mention the little diamonds I did not count, all ten of them. The best pulltab ever. Don’t give up, and don’t be afraid to try something different or go back to basics. The guys that get the goods are the guys that lead the pack and do things differently.
