A Digger’s honour

14 Apr 2018

When I dug this up, I got such a thrill and connection to our past. This worn by a brave solder who fought for King and country and ended up, like me looking for gold in Tarnagulla, Victoria Australia. Looking around now, all I see is a barren, featureless landscape, but this was once a canvas town of 30,000 prospectors, grog shops and camp followers. Later that day at the local pub one of the locals told me many solders ended up on the goldfields and an interesting fact... See how the crown on the ‘Rising Sun’ is round? That indicates it was during George V rule and hence WW1. During Queen Elizabeth’s rule (during WW2) the crown is angular! I will cherish this piece forever and pledge to honour the unknown “Digger” who owned it, especially so close to ANZAC day. Lest we forget.
