Treasures of Hannah Jumper?

07 Nov 2017

One of the historic homes in my hometown of Rockport, MA is known as the Hannah Jumper house. Hannah was the primary organizer of a temperance group in 1856. She and her hatchet gang raided drinking establishments that sold alcohol, both legally and illegally. Because of her actions, Rockport became a dry town until just recently.

The home was undergoing renovations after changing hands and it was discovered that there was no foundation, so plans were made to raise the house and pour one. Out of the blue, I received a call from a former middle school teacher (42 years ago) who said he had secured permission for me to detect under the floor boards that had been removed. This house was built in 1740 so the ground underneath has not been exposed to the weather in 277 years. What followed was the most fun I've ever had detecting as I knew every good signal was not a beer can or bottle top. Some of the better finds are an 1817 large cent, 1803 capped bust large cent, my first Connecticut copper, a shoe buckle frame and a couple pipe stems.

Someone called the local newspaper and they did an article on my finds. I have included the following link to that article that caused a lot of positive chatter in the community.
