The Rare Silver West Indies Company Medal

22 May 2019

On this beautiful day I was going to metal detect a field that I tried the day before for 1 hour with my EQUINOX 800 (Field 1). I was pretty optimistic since I already found 2 pieces of silver on that field. After digging up lots of relics mainly from the 17th century I got this faint signal showing up as a 25/28 on my screen. (A little bit jumpy) I dug out a good big plug. But one shovel deep wasn't enough, I had to dig deeper. Putting the soil next to the hole I saw the shape of a big dark disc. I realized that I found something special. After doing a bit of field cleaning I found out it was made of silver. Now I really was exited. After doing some research on the web I discovered the 5 cm silver medal was made in the late 1500s/early 1600s. It was made for the East Indies Company and very rare. In my 7 years of detecting I have never seen such a beautiful object coming out of the ground with so much history in it. My find of a lifetime!
