The gold spoke to me.

28 Sep 2017

I headed out with the intention of water detecting a few weeks back when I noticed a little too much seaweed in the water. While heading back home, I realized that I was nearby an old fairgrounds that I had hunted a few times before. The grounds had previously yielded me a few older US wheat pennies and some early 1900’s Canadian large cents and silver coins. I decided to hit a different area of the grounds with my CTX 3030 to try to coax some more silver out of the ground. I had dug a few older pennies when, at about 15 minutes into my hunt, I heard a fairly solid 12-37 at 8". The signal and depth was consistent with the large cents so I set about digging a deep plug. When I turned the plug over at around the 6" mark, I didn't see anything so between the pin pointer and shovel, I located my target a bit deeper down... then I dropped the dirt back on it, looked around to see if I was alone and nearly fell over. I was pretty certain that I had just seen a gold coin in the hole! I mean, it was what gold would look like - untarnished and it was round with a leaf wreath around the sides and the size of a half dollar. My mind went to the FE-CO numbers which didn't make sense to me for gold - I have found a few gold rings in the past but never a gold coin. So then it must be plated or some type of play money... I eventually reached in and pulled out this beauty. It turned out to be a solid 10k gold medallion. Engraved and awarded to someone for winning first place in an oration contest in 1921. I couldn't stop looking at this find for the rest of the day - and for many days to follow!
