Saxon tremissis/Bronze Age Axe Head Hoard

19 Jul 2016

I have been detecting for 18 months now using a Minelab CTX 3030. Four weeks ago, I was out with the Wantsum club on a dig on a field they had been going over for 25 years and I managed to find a Bronze Age axe head hoard from 1700BC to 1500BC - 9 complete heads and 1 broken. They were declared and 2 weeks later the FLO (Field Liaison Officer) collected them from me. I had taken the day off work to meet the FLO and after I decided to go out on my own permission for a couple of hours. After 30 minutes, I came across my 2nd ever gold coin, a fantastic Saxon tremissis. The coin is a merovingian tremissis minted in Belgium in around 570AD.

The coin has been recorded and I have shown the land owner who was amazed and congratulated me on my find which he is happy for me to keep and add to my ever growing collection thanks to my CTX 3030.
