Forgotten Dog Tag Hoard

29 Jun 2018

I live in the United States just outside of St. Louis, MO on the Illinois side. My town is a fairly decent size and every time I go out, I fail to find any silver. Tired of the unsuccessful hunt for valuable metals, I decided it was time to dig up some history and headed to the riverfront. There are many abandoned buildings along the river, so I parked my car next to the first one I saw and grabbed the GO-FIND 40 from the trunk. First signal, a dog tag from 1958. Not bad, I'll take it! Second signal, another dog tag from 1964. The third, another dog tag!! Did I accidentally stumble upon a pet cemetary?!?! Feeling a little creeped out and hoping for something different, I was going to dig one more target and move to a different spot. I walked over one more foot from the last dog tag I found and my GO-FIND went berserk, almost overloading! YES!! THIS CAN'T BE A DOG TAG!!! I dig the plug, pop it, and low and behold, IT WAS OVER 1,000 MORE! I went through them to make sure they weren't from animals that had passed away. Luckily, many were still strung together and in sequential order. All unused. PHEW! I gathered them all up and headed home to show the kids and my wife. They were just as confused as I was. We deduced that they were most likely set aside by a careless or forgetful employee and remained there until I happened along. I'm not a dog tag collector, but I do know one that was going crazy over them! I'm going to send him the majority and donate the rest to metal detecting groups for their seeded kids hunts. I think I'm going to like relic hunting. Can't wait to see what else comes out of the area! With the GO-FIND being so compact, I'll be able to hunt almost everywhere and any time I get the itch. Thanks Minelab!
