First Iron Age Gold.

28 Nov 2021

Here is my success story of the year.

November 21st. I did find the first gold with the Minelab Vanquish 540, which I bought one year ago. It's a small spiral of payment-gold probably from the period 400 to 540 CE the weight is 3,29 gram.

It was a fantastic feeling to hold the small but quite heavy object in the hand. My 15 year old son Aleksander were next to me, when I did dig it up (he uses a Vanquish 440 with V10 coil.), so it was extra nice to share the finding together with him. Aleksander asked "Are you sure it is gold?", I handed the object to him and now he could feel the weight of it in his hand. This day we were searching on a field together with our Local club "Detektor Vendsyssel, Vendsyssel Arkæologiske Forening", and when were heading towards the car where we should meet and see the members finds of the day. At the car, we met one of the board members, Michael, whom asked "did you find anything?" And I answered with a grin "Yes, just wait and see!" :-) It was very cool to show the small dirty piece to the members of the club. I will have to bake a "gold" cake for the next club meeting, maybe with a small golden spiral as decoration on top :-)

Because the small gold spiral is of historic value of Denmark it is "Danefæ" and must be handed over to the Local museum Vendsyssel Historiske Museum, and they will send it to the Danish National Museum (NM). When NM has processed the find, I will receive a tax free finders-fee, and the find can be used in further scientific research of the Iron Age in Denmark. The term "Danefæ" is more than 800 years old, and the Danefæ-law states all find of historic value, all gold and all coins before 1536 must be handed over to the NM, as the historic finds are "owned" by all Danes, not just the finder. Other finds might be of historic value to the local museum, so those we hand over to them, so the items can be used scientifically in the future, we do this per kulance, knowing that our find will be preserved for the future.

The settings were Jewelry mode, all metal and low iron bias, and with the V12 coil, the Target ID number were 7 (We also tested with Vanquish 440 and Nox 800 both were Target ID 7). I hope you like my little story.

I have added photos of the find and a photo of the items we did find on this club-search.

Best wishes Benny P.S. Please only use my first name Benny, if you publish this story.
