Finding my cheriton smiler Celtic gold stater

27 Apr 2018

It was a frosty sunny day mid Feb in Hampshire on a club dig with the Midweek searchers, a couple of nice new ploughed and rolled fields to detect, off we went, couple hours later just the usual bits, shotties and buttons! Could not get on the other field because it’s being sprayed, so went back to the field we were on the previous week and had produced some nice roman coins and brooches! Soon as I got in, I was finding roman! So spent the rest of the day in there having a great time :-) I had a good handful of roman and a small brooch so I was well happy 😊 I looked to see what the time was and suddenly remembered when we had parked up first thing around the barns I was parked I was double parked and blocking someone. And I'd said to him I'd be back for 3pm, and it was 2-50 and a good 15 min walk back to the cars! So off I went at a fast pace but swinging away as I went, as I got across the other side I got a nice signal which I dug and out popped this strange looking coin which was covered in mud? Which my first thoughts were it looked like a face with a helmet? So took a couple pics and raced back to my car. When I got back I showed it to one of the other guys and washed it in a puddle, and realised it was Celtic gold!! And couldn't believe what I'd found and one of my best days detecting I've ever had 😀
