My First Hammered Coin – A Day to Remember in North Devon
It was a beautiful day out in North Devon with our friends and the Detecting for Dementia group, exploring some lovely land we had visited before.
I was starting to feel a bit hungry and thinking about taking a break. Up to that point, I had found a few bits and pieces, including a George II halfpenny, so I was already having a decent day.
While detecting near my dad, he called me over and said, “Try this target.” I gave it a go but couldn’t pick it up, so he changed my settings for me. Then — bang — a lovely signal came through.
“That’s it, that’s my target now, Dad.”
I dug down, got my pinpointer out, and found a disc. At first, I thought it was just a button… but it wasn’t.
It was my first hammered coin — and a really nice one too: an Elizabeth I half groat.
I was so happy. I’ve finally found something really nice!
