One of the most frequently asked prospecting questions I hear concerns ground balancing gold prospecting metal detectors; what it actually does, how does it work and is it complicated to perform. I try to share everything with the K.I.S.S. (Keeping It Surprisingly Simple) principle in mind.
When we are detecting there are only a few things we are actually doing one is putting the right amount of signal into the ground (another blog topic) and making the ground disappear.
Think of your ground balance (GB) as the magician that waves a cloak over a box of dirt and once it is pulled back all you see are the targets floating in the box. Make the soil disappear and all the targets will be seen.
Forgetting to balance or not balancing enough is the downfall to every nugget hunter at one time or another. Yes even those of us that hunt with the GPX series or a Eureka Gold in the fixed mode can fall victim to not listening to the metal detector talk to us.
Learn to listen to the metal detector’s voice. I describe it in seminars as not an actual sound you hear in your headphones but a sound that seems to be coming from the back of you in most cases.
While listening to your threshold you will hear it is rhythmic. Now listen just behind that rhythm and if you hear a little wavering, your balance is moving some. Just take a few seconds and rebalance. It’s a very simple process that will ensure your success.
