CTX Pillages a rare Medieval Annular Brooch

CTX 3030

Annular-brooch.jpg

England and Scotland were uneasy neighbours in the Middle Ages, but I believe the situation has improved since those turbulent times. :-)

Scottish detectorist Rob Fallen certainly thinks so because he made the perilous journey down to Yorkshire in January 2014 looking for new land on which to swing his coil. He described the visit as ‘pillaging’, a word echoing those Medieval wars and associations with robbing and raiding.

Richard 111 Long Cross Silver Hammered Groat 1483-1485

CTX 3030

metal-detector-finds-hammer-coin.jpg

Hi my name is Colin and I live in Halifax West Yorkshire in the United Kingdom.
I am a member of the Yorkshire Searchers Metal Detecting Club, and have been a keen metal detectorist since 1990.

On Sunday I was out detecting with the Yorkshire Searchers it was a nice sunny day, we were detecting on ploughed land and it was very easy to dig.

In the morning all I was finding was military buttons, but the friend I had gone with had found a Victorian Silver Shilling and a Georgian Silver Bull Head Sixpence.

Penny penny pick me up.

CTX 3030

metal-detector-finds-coin-back.jpg

My name is Bruce and since December of 2013 I have been having a ball. In Dec I found a 1551-53 English shilling. Now for some of you that isn't so great a feat but I live in Victoria BC. Since Jan. 2nd of this year the CTX 3030 has been on fire. Now most of you get tired of chasing penny signals all day long, but sometimes they have a little kick to them. Chasing penny signals so far this year has got me 1 silver quarter, 5 silver dimes, 3 silver nickels (fishscales) 1 1878 3 pence, 4 silver rings, 1 silver key, 1 silver thimble, 1 1930s Paces Races game token, 1 1920 dog tag, 1 1920 Half Crown, 1 gold pocket watch and 3 US Half dollars. All of these were hitting the CTX 3030 in the penny range. The kicker though is the last US Half a 1855 S seated liberty.

Rare artillery

CTX 3030

metal-detector-finds-cannon-ball.jpg

While metal detecting an early artillery/arsenal with land owner's permission... I have found many cannon balls. However on February 4th I was digging an area that I had walked over many times and got a signal that had proven to be artillery shrapnel in the past. This time I decided to dig it! At first I believed it to be another 32lb solid shot...until It did not break free as the others normally do. I dug down some more to uncover something I had never seen before.

After emailing an artillery expert it has been identified as a proofing artillery projectile used to test cannons after being moulded. Expert says extremely rare. Most have never heard of these proof shots and it's a first for me! The CTX 3030 is a artillery freak! The second picture is my best day at same spot. Good luck out there!

Lost Wedding Ring found in Sand Dunes Australia

CTX 3030

metal-detector-finds-ring.JPG

I had a frantic call from a guy called Brett to say that his wife of four weeks had dropped her diamond encrusted 18 carat white gold wedding ring in the soft sand dunes at Lake Conjola on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia.

It was late in the afternoon when he called so I made the hour long drive to the location as soon as possible. When I got there Brett explained that they had half a dozen people searching the area but with no luck. I asked them to point out the vicinity that they believed the ring was dropped.

Bracelet lost for 60 years

CTX 3030

metal-detector-finds-nametag.jpg

I was at a local middle school that was a grade 1-12 school back in the day. I have been here several times before and found several silver coins. On Friday the January 24th I made a find that was more amazing than I knew at the time. I found a small Sterling bracelet with a name on it. I did not know who the person was or what he meant to my town until I researched it. I moved to Winder Ga 4 years ago and the man on the bracelet passed away in 2006.

Come to find out he was a WELL loved city councilman for 35 years and had done numerous great things for Winder. The town dedicated the newly refurbished Fire station to him in his name. He was Billy Sheridan and graduated from the school in 1955 but went there from grade 1-12 so we are not sure when he lost it. I made contact with the family through Face Book and Fox 5 Atlanta (news station) covered the return. Here is a link to that story.

I won't top this one!

CTX 3030

metal-detector-finds-coin-front.jpg

I had been pounding one of my favourite spots for about a year before digging what will surely be my best find. I had pulled about 10 coppers out of one of side of the area but only venture to the other half a few times. Every time I went over there I found nothing but trash, not this time. I moved closer to a stone wall that I hadn't paid much attention to before. After about 30 minutes of digging trash, I got a solid coin hit. I cut the plug, flipped, and I saw the copper coin. At first glance I thought it was a British piece but one I had never seen before. I took a couple of photos, put the coin in my pouch and continued detecting.

The CTX 3030 performs again... In a heavy trash zone of an old farm field in Southern New Jersey, an area I have avoided for years due to the incredible amount of aluminium can frags and iron junk, my screen was showing a wide array of junk targets numbers and one 12:30 with a solid signature One by one I pinpointed and eliminated the soda can frags and iron until only the 12:30 was left... 9 inches down this beautiful little silver 1/2 reales popped out...

We (2 my friends and I) went to a small old village. We were looking for coins about 3 hours but we don't find coins. We go to other place. But we don't find coins to this place too. We go to last place. After we've taken our metal detectors the rain is starting.
My friends went back to a car, because they don’t have not waterproof metal detectors. But I have a Minelab CTX 3030. And I go to the field.

We recently started to video document our "CA Relic Adventures" while using our Minelab machines. I use the CTX 3030 and love the quicker response and it works great in the iron invested camps and home sites. Many of these sites have been considered "hunted out" but the CTX is opening them back up and we are unearthing some amazing relics and coins.

Last week a detecting friend of mine Terry McClemments, “Delaware Digger” contacted me to ask if I would be interested in joining him on a three day detecting trip to Richmond, VA. He said a friend of his had invited him and another friend down to do some Civil War Relic hunting on private property that he had permission to hunt on. A few days before the hunt Terry's friend could not go so he called me. I told him I would see if I could get off work Monday and clear it with the wife. Vikings at the gate of Paris

CTX 3030

metal-detector-finds-coin-vikings-back.jpg

It has been a while, but finally I can put again a story down here after too long not searching. And only working, working. But all the waiting payed off.

After a car drive 350 KM towards a spot, and then again back. I got permission from the farmer, when he was taking out the sugar beets at the same time. I knew there has been an old castle from the early 9th century. I found several coins. But one coin I was very happy with. The coin was stamped in by order of Charles the Bald in 847.

In that same year a great number of Vikings stood at the Gates of Paris (know now as Paris) They were payed off with the same coins I found one. So they left the city in one peace. It was again a thrilling find with my beloved brand Minelab!!

After detecting the whole Brigade camp with the CTX 17" smart coil I decided to go back over hot spots infested with iron using the stock coil. It has paid off, big time, especially yesterday. I had already dug a few whole CW bullets when I actually got to a iron infested area. Then I dug a NY button and started circling. The 4th target I dug while circling was the 1861 Gold Indian Head that turned me back into the 10 year old digging bottles with his Grandmother. That was at 3:30. I stayed 3 hours past dark circling the area like a shark smelling blood. I ended up finding 40+ more CW items. Christmas 2013 will be 1 I'll never forget.

Rewriting History

CTX 3030

metal-detector-finds-1553-shilling.jpg

I was working the mud flats along the Gorge waterway here in Victoria BC with my CTX 3030. The first hit was a 1891 fishscale nickle, so called because of their small size, and then a faceless silver dime. My next keeper was a 1917 large cent. The final keeper as the tide was coming in was a 1551-1553 Shilling. If this coin was dropped by one of Drake's crew it could ad credence to the theory that Drake did indeed visit Vancouver Island between 1577 and 1580.

I would describe the ploughing as rough so it was very tough going and after an hour I decided to follow the line of where my GPS was telling me a hedge used to be back towards the car for some food.

Rainy Night Hunt @ The Beach = My Best Find Yet!

CTX 3030

It was a Rainy Tuesday Night, and I had just returned home from work. I had plans to go get a short hunt in that evening, even though it was raining. The swell chart said there was some larger than normal choppy waves, so I put on the rain gear and headed down.

It was very low tide when I arrived, after the first 45 minutes I had come to the conclusion that no good targets where going to be from the middle of the beach and up. So I focused on the water line to knee deep hoping to find a spot where some sand moved. I finally started finding some quarters and nickels in ankle deep water. Then I got a deep solid 12-39 on the CTX 3030. From experience zincs where I hunt never go above 12-38.

On the 20th I had a shoulder operation, although still in pain and handicapped with the one arm not being able to dig. I invited a fellow metal detector along to do the 400km trip driving. We stopped at a farm in Wellington, where a 2ct gold ring was lost next to a swimming pool. It took about an hour to find the ring in a cycad tree, next stop was at another farm in a shallow river near Cape Town, after finding sunglasses, a electronic cigarette and some coins, the 18ct engagement ring popped out in the shallow river. Needless to say, both parties were over the moon that their rings were recovered.

The pictures represent finds from March 2013 to end of Oct 2013.The ingots are what happens to the sinkers I find. The kids love playing with them thinking they are real silver bars. Boy was I in luck. I only needed to do about two or three zig zags to determine that I had come across something special.

Lost ring recovered after year in lake

CTX 3030

Metal detecting finds - ring

Was contacted last year to recover a Diamond\Platinum ring valued at $21,000. Owner lost it when it caught on the ladder while climbing into the boat. Spent over 20 hours and in the water and 12 hours drive time on two trips to the lake last year with another brand of water detector that was behaving erratically to say the least.

Purchased an E-TRAC the year before and was so impressed by its performance that I invested in the CTX 3030 as my go to water machine.

Metal detecting finds - relic

My CTX 3030 has pretty much become my partner. Riding along with me in my truck to work and play. So when it was time to take the family on our long awaited vacation, it was only natural that the CTX 3030 came along.

Camping a couple miles from the beach at Cape May NJ, and knowing the long history of that town, I grabbed the CTX 3030 and brought it with me for a day in the sun, figuring I'll squeeze some detecting in, amidst the family time.

Started metal detecting in June. I was lucky to strike gold on tour no. 4 but then nothing for a long while. Then the 14 of August I was working my way through a field with a friend, and I got a weird signal. 01:39-41 jumping around in that area, I thought I'll take a look. I dug about 8cm down and up popped a collection of coins clustered together. Exact 58 gr. 2 big ones that was silver.

CTX 3030

Metal detector finds - ring-front

It's always fun to hunt with friends. The funny thing about this ring, it was meant for me to find that ring. Everyone and their brother has been working that hole for the last 6 weeks and then I show up. You would think that hole was cleaned up. I know one of the guys and he has an Excalibur II. He knows that Excalibur II inside and out, that's all he uses. That day I found that ring he had been in that hole and only found 2 silver and 1 toe junk ring the 2 days before. That tells me that the CTX 3030 with the 17" coil is going deeper than his Excalibur II.

I have found several Roman coins an Anglo Saxon relic. And a very, very nice Celtic coin.

Shortly after obtaining permission to detect on a piece of private property, I received a killer signal on my CTX 3030. To my surprise I unearthed a nice silver Washington quarter, but the real surprise was hiding right next to the quarter.

As a rule of thumb I always make sure to re-scan my hole in hopes of finding another item. In this case the find of my life was hiding out right next door to that silver quarter. As I scanned the ground I received the exact same signal at the exact same depth as the silver quarter. Fully expecting to retrieve another silver quarter I decided to capture this dig on film. What I unearthed next took my breath away.

After making sure it was in my scoop I kicked the scoop of sand and there it was, big and round. At first glance it looked like a class ring. It had some weight to it. On closer inspection it turn out to be a ring from a US marine.

Metal detectorist returns diamond ring

A great weekend away fishing at our little shack on Yorke's Peninsula suddenly turned into a nightmare when my beautiful diamond ring, which had been a 25th wedding anniversary present from my husband, 5 years earlier, flew off my finger and into the choppy sea!

The events unfolded after I had rowed our dinghy out to the weed-line some distance from shore but still only in about 2 metres of water. Having tossed the anchor overboard I proceeded to bait up my hand line and having just caught a slimy trumpeter, flung out the newly baited line once again. This time though, my heart stopped as I realised my ring had flown off my finger along with the line. I had recently had the ring resized as it was a little tight and as my hands were slippery, it made for the perfect storm.

A friend and I was lucky enough to be able to hunt around a home built in the late 1700’s . This site has been hunted many times by many different detectors. I was not to surprised that most of the finds were very deep. After about an hour of finding a few clad coins and lots of can slaw I got multiple targets on my CTX 3030 screen.

Disappointment washed over me as I dug out the first target, another piece of trash, digging a little farther my heart raced as I saw what looked like a token. Carefully retrieving the object and cleaning the dirt I jumped for joy it was a rare Arizona token.

12/12/12 started off like another day. I hopped on the computer and started researching a place to hunt. If you're not familiar with the Boise area (or even the west in general) it's a very new area as far as modern civilization is concerned. French fur trappers established a presence in the mid 1800's but it wasn't until fort Boise was built in 1863 that the valley really started to develop.

My detecting life

CTX 3030

Metal detecting finds - Edward the Confessor silver penny

Winner of Find of the Month - October 2012

My name is Mal and I have been a metal detectorist since 1978. I live in a small village just outside Oxford with my wife and son surrounded by beautiful countryside steeped in history going back to the Iron Age and beyond.

I was first introduced to metal detecting by a stranger I watched in a field next to where I was fishing. He was walking about strangely with this flying saucer on the end of a metal pole and every now and then he dug a hole and put what he found in his pocket. Well curiosity got the better of me and I wandered across to see what he was doing. He said he was hunting for old coins and he brought out of his pocket an assortment of old pennies and half pennies he had found. I was hooked, excuse the pun, fishing forgotten and went about finding out where to buy one of these strange machines.
