William the lion

29 Mar 2017

It was a lovely day and my friend asked if I wanted to join him for a few hours on one of his permissions. We arrived about 3:30pm and started detecting. After finding 3 or 4 worn copper coins and a musket ball, I found a George V shilling so I was happy that I had a silver. Then about 10 mins later, I dug another nice signal and saw the edge of a coin and thought yes, a second silver. I assumed it was a worn sixpence but once I popped it out of the clod I saw the stars and realised I had just found my first ever Scottish hammered coin.

I called my friend over and we sent a pic to the clubs coin expert who quickly identified it as ... William I (The Lion), Short Cross and Stars Coinage (1195-1214), Phase A, moneyer: Hue, Mint: Edinburgh (+HVE ON EDENBUR), Spink 5027...well chuffed.
