Resurrecting American History

09 May 2017
Find of
the Month

I was invited to tag along on a detecting adventure in central Virginia. I'd never had the opportunity to detect in an area so rich in history. I purchased a new 17" coil for my CTX so that I could get maximum depth and coverage. That proved to be a very wise decision. We arrived and started detecting an area very close to where we'd parked. Within minutes I found my first eagle button, then a bullet, another button, and on and on.

The first day was incredible and I thought it couldn't possibly get better... was I ever wrong. Day 2 was rainy and we moved to another permission - the targets were few and far between.

I was wishing we were back at the first property and daydreaming about everything I'd missed the day before when a high strong signal sounded off. I dug a deep plug and started searching the hole with my pinpointer. When the sword plate fell to the bottom of the hole I was totally surprised and in shock.

I called my Detecting buddy over and we high-fived and both shared our opinion on how it ended up there. There was some gold showing through the dirt and a bit of cleaning revealed an amazing amount of gold still in place. I was told it would clean up even more, but I'm going to leave it as is.

This officer's sword plate is truly my best find and I feel blessed to have found it. I have found some amazing things with my Minelabs, but this is, no doubt, my once-in-a-lifetime discovery.
