Portington 3 day Rally

08 Sep 2016

I have had my CTX 3030 for a couple of months so still finding out just what it can do. From the start I have had some great finds but not really tested it until the Rally!

I got to the Rally camp site on the Thursday, after setting up camp (photo 1) I went to sign in. Whilst at the reception tent I looked at the map with the fields highlighted that we would be detecting on, there was well over 200 acres. The following day we all gathered for briefing, there must have been 100 detectorists. We were given three fields, about 75 acres, and as soon as we were given the off, I made my way to field number two with just 6 others. I was finding almost immediately, nothing of any great note, until I received a really good signal. The depth was indicated at 8 inches, after digging a hole 18 inches deep my find was in full view. Not gold, not silver but bronze, it is the first time I have ever seen a metal detector find quite like it (photo 2) a bronze anvil. It has a beautiful green patina suggesting it had been in the ground for some time. I continued finding the odd coin none of any great age but at-least I continued to find. I returned to the camp site for lunch and have my finds recorded. Even though there were a number of gold and silver coins found my anvil was regarded as the best find of the day, and it was only lunchtime. Sadly whilst I continued to find throughout the Rally the only find of note was my anvil. I or any of the other Rally Searchers have ever seen such a find as my anvil. Whilst not of any great value and an age of only 100 years this anvil has to be my best find this year thus far.
