My biggest treasure find

16 Aug 2017

My wife bought me a Sovereign XS as a gift. Quickly I was making good finds that I and my friends had missed previously. When we bought a new house I decided to detect it before my wife had a chance to plant flowers just to keep the peace. Under a 70' white pine tree I got a hit in the pull tab range and it sounded deep. What really stood out was it had a consistent round sound. It was between two roots which formed a V shape. When I got down to 18" I hit an old zinc Mason jar lid. I figured that must be my treasure so I tried to pry it up. That is when I realized It was still attached to a jar.

As I started to dig it out I saw a mass of silver coins looking back at me through the glass! My heart must have stopped for a few beats. I continued to dig until I could pry the jar out of the hole. When it came out of the hole I could see it was a gallon Mason jar FULL of silver half dollars! But I did not have a chance to focus on it as a second jar fell free from the side of the hole. It was a quart jar full of assorted coins. In total I had just found 776 coins in one hit! Over $300 of it was in silver half dollars. The Dates ranged from 1862-1964. With my previous machine I would have probably ignored it if it had even registered a hit. The Sovereign though gave me more input to where I could see a difference from just what that meter was displaying. This was my first year detecting and it has been mighty hard to top!
