It waited 2 millennia for me...

Find of
the Month

This time of year is always a bit tough for metal detectorists over here in England with most of the fields under crop and therefore out of bounds so we find ourselves restricted to the hard packed field edges & whatever pasture we have permission to detect on but I'm happy to announce that my trusty CTX3030 and I really struck lucky this week. I discovered a thin strip about 100 metres long at the edge of a broad bean field that had been missed by the planter so I set out to cover it slow & low to see what I could winkle out. After about 90 minutes my tally was unremarkable despite some really sweet signals from my CTX.........a handful of vintage shotgun caps, some .22 bullets, an early 20th century spoon handle & a 1980's pulltab and I was beginning to wonder if I was wasting my time when a slightly lower tone rang out. I pinpointed the find carefully & dug a plug of the heavy clay out to a depth of about 8 inches. Using my Pro-Find 25 I located the general area of the item & carefully eased the clod apart to expose the lovely buttery glint of a tiny golden disc. A gentle wipe over with a damp tissue revealed the unmistakably beautiful and typically Celtic design of a horse with sun & moon above it which left me open mouthed but speechless, I had just found my first ever Gold quarter stater (and also my first gold coin of any kind!!) After placing the coin in a special pouch to prevent my prize from getting damaged I carefully scanned the surrounding area but it appears this was a single coin loss so I packed away my gear & headed home with a huge smile on my face. Thankyou Minelab for supplying the tools that have given me many happy days of searching and some wonderful finds, this being the best by far!
