I've had worse days.

18 May 2017

The club was detecting in an area where only a couple of weeks earlier, 2 Bronze age axe heads had been found. At the time this was not in my thoughts as that was the sort of thing other people find. I was using my trusty Minelab Safari. My first three finds of the day were a cattle ear tag, a copper coin and a silver shilling of William III.

My fourth signal took some finding and when I reached approximately 10 inches deep there was a Bronze age Axe head. I was elated and had to show everyone. After lunch we went into the field where 2 axe heads had previously come from, I did not get a signal so decided to go back to a smaller field I had briefly visited in the morning. A friend of mine called out to wish me luck and said that I could do with a Bronze age spear to go with my axe, some chance I replied.

I wandered around the field for a while and then decided as it was getting late to head diagonally across the field to the gate. About half way there, I got a good signal of about 35 and thought it was very similar to my previous find. At about 5 inches down, I saw a hint of Bronze again and thought if it was another axe I would never live it down. On removing the item, I suddenly realised it was part of a spear. As I made my way back to the start point I met Mike who asked me what I had found as I had such a wide grin on my face. It was Mike who had told me to find a spear so I showed him and said I was just following instructions. After congratulations all round I thought "I've had worse days".
