6.7 Gram Nugget on First Day in the Black Hills!

09 Nov 2016

I bought a SDC 2300 for use in the Black Hills of South Dakota and finally got to use it. It was odd how it all worked out because I was supposed to go agate hunting that day. My friend bailed on the agate hunting so I was going to practice with my CTX 3030 in the park when it dawned on me that I have not had a chance yet to go look for nuggets with my SDC 2300. Here in the Black Hills nuggets are rare and paydirt is usually deep. Well, this one Saturday it was not. Detecting in the middle of the creek here in autumn meant the water was low, and one area had exposed bedrock. Now, don't get me wrong, I dug about 30 nails for 4 hours before this, so when I got the hit on bed rock, I was not excited at first but as soon as my scoop came up I could see the nugget, almost 1/4 ounce. I could not believe it, my first time detecting for gold with my SDC 2300 and I find a rare gold nugget in the Black Hills. I am extremely grateful to have found this, most gold in the hills is dust or small flake with the biggest I have ever mined being a 0.5 gram picker.

That Saturday I became a nugget owner for the first time. Thanks Minelab for a great detector!
