1911 Canadian Half Dollar

23 Aug 2016

I got out for a short hunt to one of my favorite spots. My hunting buddy and myself have hunted here many times, as well as other local detector enthusiasts. It wasn't long before the Safari hit on a decent repeatable, if scratchy sounding, 35. Expecting a penny or maybe a Large Cent, I was disappointed to pull an old bottle cap out of the side wall of the hole. But upon further probing with my pinpointer and my finger, I was delighted to see the edge of a large silver coin. After gently removing it from the soil, I was blown away by the condition and age of this Half Dollar. It's a 1911 Half with an interesting story. Usually Canadian coins have either a D:G or DEI GRATIA on the obverse ( BY GODS GRACE ). In this particular year, the mint omitted the words, sealing the coins fate to be called "godless". The public rejected these coins in all denominations, and the DEI GRATIA was returned on subsequent mintage years.
