Viking Age Coin

02 Jan 2014

Finally, my x-mas holiday had began. I was home and ready to detect the fields next door to where I grew up. So I put on my little backpack, findbag and trash bag, and got to it.

The field have a very good potential to give me some good finds, but I just keep finding trash. After a few hours and very little to show for, I am starting to get a bit tired. And again I get another jumpy, trash signal in the foil-pull tab range. But I decide to dig it because "you never know".

I pull the plug open, and put the pinpointer to work. About 10cm down (4inch's) there is something, something shiny. I lift it up and BAM! I realize I have just found my first hammered coin. I remember sitting on my knees and singing a happy tune to the stars in the dark evening. With a bit of help from my community it was identified as a German Pfennig, minted in Köln about 900-1000AD.

What a great start of my holiday.
