Unexpected silver

24 Mar 2015

I was out with a few members of the Northern relic hunters trying to gain a few new permissions, we were successful on that front but after a few hours of fruitless searching decided to move on to a proven area I have. We had a relative newcomer to the hobby with us and its always a good site that rarely fails, so we were hoping to get Charlotte a good find or two. We had had been on a ploughed field for around two hours with a couple of decent finds. A toy cannon in lovely condition and Charlotte managed a lovely silvered button yet to be identified. I moved over into a pasture field that we hadn't tried before and after 10 minutes or so hit a decent signal, a definite digger. I took the plug out and checked the resulting hole with the pinpointer , it was still in there, loosening the soil gently, as hammered have come from this permission regularly, out dropped a blackened disc. I thought initially it was another hammered coin but on closer inspection it turned out to be a Roman Silver Siliqua which are normally very heavily clipped, this however is in very good condition with no major signs of clipping. It came totally out of the Blue as no one expected any Roman coins to come from this site. It put a great day out up to a tremendous day out.
