Silver Hoard and Golden Coins

Hello Minelab !

I would like to share a story about finding silver treasures and golden coins with my Minelab E-TRAC.

Last summer (2014) a friend of mine called me to come over at his holidayspot at the border of Holland – Germany. It was a warm summer afternoon and at the end of the day we decided to swing our machines for a while until darkness would set in. So we’ve found an old field with grass to hunt. I’d bought the Minelab E-trac just weeks before. The first signal was that loud that my buddy said that is was presumably a tin can. So when I digged the signal out I saw this huge silver coin, my heart was pounding out of my chest. And that was not the only coin….I found 13 more ! These coins have a weight of almost a third kilo ! They weight about 30 grams each. These coins are so called Silver Thalers, Minted in Germany and Austria between 1565 – 1630. These Thalers were used in Holland as Daalders…and when the Dutch went to America in tehe late 1600’s they introduced these coins over there and became the well known Dollars. Some story or what !

2 weeks after this stunning find  I went to France with my family. An it was hot over there, over 37 degrees Celcius !  Good tempeture with a beer at a pool..…but hunting with my detector was really an expedition ! I rubbed myself in with anti-bug spray and went to a farmer who had a little old medieval ruin on his field. He gave me permission to hunt his ground and I thanked him with a fine bottle of red wine. After 1 hour  hunting I walked back to my cart o get something to drink. Next to a huge stone (big as a truck) I got this massive beep. I could not find the object in the hole, only stones. My pinpointer went crazy pointing at one of these stones…I thought it was a meteorite. But When I broked it in 2 pieces I saw this hollow stone with a bunch of silver coins in it…all stacked together. There were 12 of them ! I rushed to my caravan and cleaned them up, after some research I discovered that these coins were all the same and medieval ! 12th century AC ! Minted in Toulouse France in 1130-1160 and known as Deniers (named after the earlier Roman Denarius ).

Man, I was thrilled…2 silver hoards within 2 weeks ! Could it be any better….yes it would!

2 weeks later I went with 7 other buddy’s detecting in the United Kingdom. We’ve found several silver medieval coins, and as usually….it was raining cats and dogs in the UK. On the second day I was the only one without finding something good…and my friends were making fun of me because I was the only one with a Minelab….Oh I would get them…and revenche is bitter sweet…..and that moment came when I found this stunning golden coin…..!! It was not that old but it was gold !! It was a golden sovereign, Queen Victoria 1873 !

Golden Sovereign

I think I can say that it was a good summer, all these marvelous finds ! But….to end the year 2014 with a bang…..I found another golden coin in Holland…just 2 kilometres away from my hometown…..hunting an old field next to a farm. We did some research on the surroundings and we’ve discovered that had been an old road that had been used by monks. After founding a hugh medieval silver coin I’d found this beautifull French coin….made of solid gold (24K) and medieval ! Minted in France by king Charles the Victorious in 1436. And he had a famous supporter…the one and only Jeanne dÁrc.

So, next to all kinds of other great finds that year I can really ascertain that the Minelab E-TRAC is the best metaldetector I’ve ever had. Were I live the soil is very difficult to hunt due to mineralization. The Minelab however has not the slightest problem with these grounds. Homage to the inventors of this great machine.

Best regards from the Netherlands/Europe,

John Kay
