Minelab
Sovereign Elite

Roman Treasure

28 May 2011

I have been a keen detectorist for many years and have had my share of good finds. Five years ago I purchased a Sovereign Elite. I found this a wonderful machine and preferred the fact that it was audio only (old school), However five years on it died and I sent it back to Minelab for it to be Resurrected. This was done and professionally and quick. soon after I went to a field I know has been detected on by at least twelve people for about twenty five years. Please see the photo of an object that was ten inches deep and I first thought was a crushed bottle cap. I realised Then that it was gold I reported it to our FLO Jessica smith at Lewes museum and awaited the outcome. It was sent to the British Museum and is regarded as treasure being described as a Roman votive offering. One of the most respected Roman archaeologists in Britain Martin Henig said “The small votive offering found by Derek Hill, This is MOST exciting! It is a medical votive in gold, more specifically a womb, as shown in earlier terracottas from Veii and Vulci “I am not surprised as conception was an anxiety in antiquity. We have had votive breasts in various materials(But not in gold) but this is the first uterus I have seen from Great Britain” Subsequently this was named find of the month at my local detecting club in Eastbourne and can be seen in Treasure Hunting Magazine June issue under Club round. It just goes to show that a Minelab can outperform many of it’s rivals. Derek Hill - UK
