Grand Army of the Republic Civil War Vet Medal

25 Jul 2014

I was detecting a piece of property where a house built in 1849 once stood. The place had been detected years ago but I figured my E-TRAC would be able to pull out some more goodies. In the middle of my hunt I pulled out this pin looking object shaped like a star and figured it was a kids deputy badge or something. Once I got home and cleaned it up I saw it was something entirely different.

In front of me was a piece of American history that so many of us would like to find. The find is a Grand Army of the Republic Civil War Medal that they gave to Veterans who became members. It even has the membership Id on it of V1602. Also, one of the special things about these medals is that they are made out of cannon bronze from cannons that were in the war. It's a special find and I hope I can link it to the man who once fought so bravely to earn it.
