Good things also come in threes

07 Nov 2014

Well yes we have all heard the phrase that so called "Bad things happen in Threes" well for sure that can be reversed to Good Things also. For just yesterday my friend Steve went to a local well searched site and made three remarkable finds, all from the same historical period. He was out with his Minelab Safari when a short sharp and very fluty signal revealed a good target. However no digging was involved in this instance as their on the rough plough soil clearly lay a small silver coin. Closer examination revealed it was a rare Anglo Saxon Woden Head style Sceat. I just love the little moustachioed face it’s just pure Saxon. Then twenty or so minutes later and some several hundred metres from the Scaet find spot he received another good signal......a second Saxon Scaet was revealed!!!! This time a Frisian Style example very well struck with a central cross design.

This was good luck in the extreme. Then after a few more hours which included about 20 Roman coins he decided to head off for home. But did not reach the edge of the field before another good signal sounded in his headphones. Well for the third time that session Anglo Saxon England saw the light of day. His third find was a delightful zoomorphic strap end. Well that sure does seem to prove the point that good things do also come in threes. As regards Anglo Saxon England this period is often referred to as the Dark Ages.......but they are lightening up. With continued finds like this although only in general terms a tiny representation of those times..... every little helps to illuminate this murky period of history. Thus showing both the importance of metal detection and of course having a quality metal detector. All the best in searching to everyone out there....
