Success Story

My friend invited me out to detect a suspected small town fairground from the 1850s. It was one of those places where there are fields as far as the eye can see, and you have no idea where you're supposed to be looking! I have found that in these situations it's best to listen to the threshold rather than any signals you get; sometimes the lack of threshold (indicating the presence of trash) will lead you into the areas where the activity was. We detected for hours, traversing the field and trying to determine a possible perimeter, but met with nothing other than mangled aluminium cans.

Finally I hit a target that in any other setting I may have passed over, but as this field had NOTHING to give I figured I'd take a look to see what trash it was. It was a low penny tone. I dug a big plug and each time I broke it in half, and in half again, the chances increased that it was actually going to be a coin and not another beer can. Well, when I split the clod for the last time and the full side of the coin appeared, my heart started pumping in my throat. I placed it down and yelled at the top of my lungs to my friend who was about 200 yards away. Finally he turned and saw me jumping around like those fools on TV when they find an Indian head penny. I ran towards him and he ran towards me.... You should have seen his face as I yelled, " GOLD, GOLD it's GOLD!" We got back to the target... and the rest is in the video attached, for your viewing pleasure.
