Dispelling 4800 "Relic Hunter" myth

02 Jul 2015

My 4800 had very little use since originally purchasing it some 9 months or so ago, the SDC was helping me find heaps of sub grammers so why change. With the introduction of the Elite 14" Mono coil it was time to change all that ... reports were indicating it was finding sub gram as well as larger nuggets, time to bite the bullet. Original intent was to borrow a dealers "loan" coil, unfortunately it had not been returned. Returned the next day .... still not back SO, took the plunge and parted with my cash and spent the next couple of hours detecting around Ballarat in Victoria. With nothing to show head back to my unit with the intention of watching my team play football on TV. To my disgust the match wasn't being televised so, as I had an hour or so to kill before having to pick up the wife ........ naturally, went for another swing. After a few junk targets got a nice "mellow" signal, a bit of a scrape and things started getting louder and I was beginning to think large nail, piece of iron or??. Small picks and big coils on a GPX can NOT be recommended .... once past the 12" mark the target was out and on the 3rd or 4th scoop full something heavy fell into my palm ...... a nice dirty nugget that when cleaned indicated 21.6 gms. GPX 4800 and 14" Elite had combined to give me my best nugget to date AND dispelled forever the unwarranted "Relic Hunter" tag that's so common when people refer to the GPX 4800.
