Detecting saved my son

16 Mar 2015

My story is not so much about a specific find as much as it is about the discovery of what this hobby has brought to my 11-year-old son, Jack, at a time of great turmoil and suffering. Jack got his first detector (Bounty Hunter) for Christmas a few years ago and it sat unused in the garage until last spring when he took it out and got his first few coin pulls at a local park. From that point on he was hooked. We went out every day we could for hours at a time hitting up every local park and school and then branched out to nearby communities here in North East Wisconsin. Some of his best finds were a few Mercury dimes, an Indian head penny, a bunch of Wheaties, some artifacts from the mid 1800's, a few pieces of silver and gold jewelry, and a primitive copper arrowhead dating back around 7,000 years. Everything is displayed proudly and looked after with great care as Jack is a perfectionist and learns as much as he can about each item so that he can chat about them with expertise at the local Metal Detecting club he joined. The club consists primarily of a dozen or so "old-timers" and Jack who sits eagerly and attentively taking in the tips and information they generously share. Jack almost always wins several of the monthly "best finds" categories which seem to both impress and humble his fellow club members! Along with the pride this brought, Jack also was able to save enough "clad" (he found A LOT!) to purchase a barely used Minelab X-TERRA 705 from an elderly gentleman we met in a park who was so impressed by Jack's enthusiasm for the hobby that he gave him a great deal as he had an extra one he could part with. Jack was in heaven!

Happy Minelabbing!
