CTX with 17" coil finds deep gold nobles & ring

09 Oct 2014

Since my previous success story where we uncovered part of a medieval hoard Cliff and I have returned to the field, this time armed with the CTX and using the amazing 17" coil for extra depth using a tadpole 2 program by Gordon Heritage, the results are remarkable! We thought we had found everything having been backwards and forwards across the site many times until we tried it using the 17" coil! suddenly there were signals again, some of them so deep they didn't even give a pinpoint tone.

First hits were a couple of the beautiful Henry VI groats, then i got a different kind of tone, we shared the digging as by now we were going down a good two inches deeper than the standard coil had and found another stunning groat, before we filled in the hole I stuck in my propoint and there was something else there! pushing in my finger I flicked out a shining gold ring - intricately decorated and set with a polished deep blue stone it took my breath away and even seeing pictures of it now still gives me the goosebumps!

This was surely the best day ever! even beating the gold Noble day, little did I know what was to follow... A few more Henry VI hammered coins followed across the field before a very weak put pure signal had us digging again, very deep, the deepest I've ever dug anything of this size! finally the propoint indicated something was close in the base so i carefully dug around the clod and handed it to Cliff, Flipping heck he said showing me the immaculate noble in his hand then we looked down and realised there was another shining up from the earth he had dropped!

It's hard to put into words the feeling I had at this point but anyone who has spent years hoping for one find like this will appreciate how it might feel and I think I may have sworn a little! All in all after some more visits we added a coin or two but nothing like that day again, all of the coins pictured came to the CTX with the big coil and have since been handed in as treasure, we will wait and see what happens next.....
