CTX 3030 Gold Ingot Viking or Bronze age

12 Dec 2013

Having had a lovely morning detecting with good friends I decided to have quick break before heading into a new field. Using Google earth on my phone I located myself and noticed an unusual hedge formation in the next field and plotted a waypoint on my CTX3030 GPS to help to know when I was in the area.

I would describe the ploughing as rough so it was very tough going and after an hour I decided to follow the line of where my GPS was telling me a hedge used to be back towards the car for some food.

About halfway across I had what I would describe as a strong mellow signal and sank my spade into the soft earth. As I tipped it over a small golden object rolled sideways out, my first thought was just a bit of old rubbish like a broken pen top, at least that's what I thought until I picked it up and felt the weight!!

Turns out I was holding a 23.4 gram solid gold ingot of either Bronze age or Viking origin which is possibly the end of a bar torc. It took me a while to stop shaking but once I did I covered the area and logged the Findpoint on my CTX3030. Amazing doesn't quite sum it up and I still struggle to believe how lucky I am.

The ingot/torc end is presently passing through the treasure process so hopefully in the future I will get a more exact opinion on its true identification. Thanks once again to Minelab this find simply wouldn't have happened without my CTX3030.
