Check the hole

03 Jun 2015
As winter thaws here in New Hampshire, the metal detecting bug is biting.  With a little time after dropping the “boys” off at a mid-afternoon Boy Scout meeting, I pull on an extra sweatshirt and head out for my first hunt of the year.  Many places you can still see places where winter is trying to hang on.  Knowing that time was short, I went just up the road to a small patch of woods, where in the past I had some luck with my old Explorer XS.  Thinking about the last time I hunted here, wondering why I haven’t been here in years.   I have pulled some older coins out of here before, but it’s a very small site with plenty of trash.  This time, I’m bringing my E-Trac.  I plan to dig everything, but as any detectorist knows, you get tired of pulling out pull tabs all afternoon.  Sometimes I get lazy and skip over the easy pennies.  I was pulling bullets, .22 casings and shotgun casing, while trying to figure out the last time someone was actually able to shoot around here.  It had to be a long time ago, with all the buildings and businesses (and a school) just around the corner.  Got a nickel and a couple of pennies. Then, I got an odd hit, not like the hits I’ve been digging, this one was just "different".  The E-Trac was hinting copper and I expected another shell casing.  I work on pin-pointing the target, as I’m thinking what can it be?  Probably a couple shotgun shells in a pile or a piece to pipe.     Oh well, I’ll take the change.  Got down on my knees and dig a plug through about 3 inches of earth. When I remove the plug, I give it a quick swipe over the coil, and think “great, it’s still in the hole”.   Looking down, I see the actually see the edge of a Silver coin and its big, not a dime.  Sweet, I'm thinking to myself, a silver quarter, I knew there was still some goodies left here.   But the edge of the coin looks thin, so I carefully extracted it from the hole.  Silver yes, U.S. Quarter, no.  In my hand I have a very nice Spanish 2 Reale.  Wasn’t detecting for more than 30 minutes and I got "Spanish Silver".  My heart is pounding, what a way to start the year!!  But, a little voice in the back of my head was saying something about the E-Trac hinting copper, not silver.  Check the hole again, always check the hole again (just to make sure) and guess what, the E-Trac was right, there was another coin.  This one was the size of a US Large Cent, but all I could make out was a faint outline of a head.  Anyhow, now I'm really excited, two  colonials.  I stand and stretch, then swipe my coil over the hole again, and, another copper hit.  I'm thinking no way.  Back down on my knees I drop, as I put the probe back into the hole, and yes, another copper coin.  Another Large Cent, but this one I can see writing on it.  I could read “Connect”.  A Colonial Connecticut copper.  What could be better??  Three colonial coins, and I've only been here 30 minutes.    I can't wait to show the boys, who are always interested at seeing if I’ve found anything cool.  Both boys have also recently been bitten by the detecting bug and I can't wait to get them out detecting with me.  Looking at "my" treasure I stand and think about how these coins came to be here, or how much they were worth to the poor individual who lost them.  How I was able to find them after being in the ground over 200 years.  But my time is just about up and I got to go pick them up. I swipe the hole again as I'm getting ready to fill my hole and go. Solid silver hit, I say to myself, there’s no way another coin is I that hole, but I'm back on my knees without even realizing I’m down.  I run the probe around the hole.  Another coin, another silver coin, another Spanish coin, a 1773 ½ reale.  One hole, four Colonial coins. Any one of these coins by themselves would make a great detecting day, I got all four.  So now I’m thinking to myself, it’s going to be hard to top this hunt, but I have my E-Trac.  Thank you Minelab   Marc W.
