Borotinsky

31 Oct 2014

Hi everyone!!

I will tell you the story which happened 7 years ago. I did not realize that I will be engaged in numismatics, sometimes I helped my dad (hold the shovel)))), we did not have much time, and money.

My father had a friend priest: father Alexey (his father, grandfather and grand grandfather were priests.). Father priest told my dad this story about treasure chest in the garden, where landlord Borotinsky lived.  He resided in the Derben village, Kirsanov district. The priest’s grand grand father had the parish of more than 300 houses.

(The beginning of 18th century – era of Peter the Great, village called Vyajlya freely stretched along the river. There are no rich landlords, only Russian tiller peasants and landlords- smallholders live peacefully in these steppes (there is a street calls smallholder in the Ramza village). Russia is oriented to the South, Caucasus, Azov, etc. Vyajlins peasants actively supporting Russian army with purveyance, in summer time by ship on Voron River, through marina Zaton using big boat-barge called “hoperki”. The drawn horses pulled barge along the Voron River. In winter time they used sledge.  All purveyance was delivered to the two Tambov provinces: Morshansk on the North (including Tambov) and Borisoglebsk on the South. I need to mention that the landlords -smallholders who lived in Derben on that time were the ancestors of famous writer A.S. Pushkin. His descendants still lives in Derben. In 1721, Russian troops under the command of Major-General Ivan Ilyich Dmitriev-Mamontov took the fortress of Derbent (the ancient capital of Dagestan city) after second attempt. The Russian name of this fortress is Derben (Iron Gate). Peter the Great gifted part of Vyajlya to Mamontov and he renames it to Derben. And since that historical time (as old people said) Derben belonged to Mamontov. The brick temple was built between two ravines called Pokrov-na-Vyajle, and even now we still can see the ditches of the church foundation. Nobody knows when the church was demolished, may be even before soviet time.

In 1798, Vyajlya was gifted to Boratinksy family, and Aleksandra Fedorovna and Abram Andreevich travelled to see this place. I believe that part of Vyajlya (Derben) belongs to A.M. Dmitriev-Mamonov, who was the favorite of Ekaterina the Great and A. A. Boratinsky knew him. Abram Andreevich may bought Derben village or rent part of it including main manor house and some buildings around. On the 19th February 1800 (according old calendar style) the first child in Boratynsky family was born. They named him Evgeny. The future poet was christened in this Pokrov - on – Vyajlya Temple (Pokrov church in Vyajlya village). Sofia and Irakliy were born later and in March 1804 Boratinsky family moved to the new estate – Mara. Abram Andreevich informing in detail his sister M.A. Panchulidzeva, the Maryinka owner.

In 1840 the Vyajlya was divided on eight parts, and Aleksandra Fedorovna owning Derben and this is documentary proved by M.A. Klimkova. Lieutenant-General Boratinskaya certainly remembers how it is happened: the part of Vyajlya along the river she is giving away to her children and Derben (manor house and some buildings around) keeping for herself. According M.A. Klimkova, in 1850 she bequeaths Derben to daughters Natalia and Varvara and to granddaughters Aleksandra Sergeevna , Sofia Sergeevna and Anastasia Sergeevna.

Probably Pokrov – on – Vyajlya Temple was dismantled and Aleksandra Fedorovna used that bricks to build Church of Ascension in 1818 in Mara. The brick were very scarce material on that time and it did not contradict with Russian orthodox rules for using them. There was another new wooden church built on the border of Mariyinka and Vyajlya village called Pokrovskaya in 1886. At present time we have monument there to the fallen countrymen in the World War II and beautiful oak grove. Part of Derben, which belonged to Sofia Sergeevna Boratinckaya (wife of V.N. Chicherin), was transferred to Piotr Nikolaevich Chicherin (he represented Tambovsky-Chicherin family). Another part of Derben, which belonged to Varvara Abramovna (died in 1891), was transferred (according M.A. Klimkova) to her daughters Olga Aleksandrovna Dmitrieva-Mamonova (Rachinskaya) and Varvara Aleksandrovna Rachinskaya.

From my point of view, part of Derben, was inherited to Dmitriev-Mamonov. The young Olenka Rachinskaya (died in 1917) and Emmanuil Aleksandrovich Dmitriev-Mamonov met each other here. Later the Derben was inherited to their son Sergey (he was married on Aleksdandra Mihaylovna Boratinskaya). You can find her grave in Mara. All other parts of Derben were transferred to the relatives of Sergey Emmanuilovich, and later to his son – Michail Sergeevich Dmitriev-Mamonov. He was the last landlord of Derben.

Michail Sergeevich Dmitriev- Mamonov was 27 years old in fateful 1917. In this crucial for Russian history period of time, nobleman Piotr Nikolaevich Chicherin lived in Derben. He had his own small land strip and was taking care after Michail Sergeevich Dmitriev-Mamonov’s estate. (the last successor of the Boratinsky land ).The history does not tell us anything about Michail Sergeevich Dmitriev-Mamonov and Piotr Nikolaevich Chicherin. There are a lot of works here if somebody will decide to investigate… According to the buildings inventory (M.A. Klimkova ), there was some buildings remain in good condition during transferring to A.F. Boratinsky, but I  don’t think so myself, because  there was a possibility of destroying everything when Derben forestry was liquidated. Some of the sights and the park generally remained good.

Peter the Great - Tsar and Russian Emperor, during the return of Russian troops from the war in the Caucasus (in 1721), established the military camp in Vyajli village. And Peter the Great gifted part of Vyajli village to I.I. Dmitriev-Mamontov, and he renamed it to Derben – the oldest ancient town in Russia (more than 5000 years).)))) Now let’s finish the facts.

So in 1851- 1855 this landowner travelled to England, France, Moscow (I doubt about it) with the nuns from Kirsanov convent. They participated in some sewing contest of church clothing.  Probably they won some places, because somebody found the medal in his estate.))))

One day the priest was returning home through the landowner garden and spotted that somebody was digging. The same situation happened next day: the priest shouted and the man run away.

On the next day the priest took another road to go home but through the same garden: and again somebody was digging in the night. He shouted, but man disappeared in the darkness. He tried unsuccessfully   catch the digger and later told this story to the wife and son.

On the next day the priest tried to allocate the place where he saw the digger man, but could not find the exact place.

On several occasions the priest saw like somebody was digging in the garden but later the church burnt and the priest died. This story passed on from his grandfather (priest’s son) to father, from father to son (priest Alexey).

This is the story)))))

There was 3 treasure chests found in this garden:  one was found by my father and me (I just hold the shovel )))) it was my first treasure finds and encourage me  to this Hobby!!!))))))

(The treasure consisted of 423 very small coins and gold plated medal that I mentioned earlier!!!!) A lot of copper coins were scattered in the garden))). This place is quite developed by hunters at present, but I go there from time to time to get a chance to find something valuable))))).

Next time I will do some pictures and upload for you!!

Just try to talk with the people in the villages, get the stories from them, they know a lot of things and ready to share with you))))))))))))

Good luck to everyone……………
