Battle axe from the 800`s Viking period

24 Mar 2015

A beautiful spring day when I and my Minelab X-Terra 505 was out on a great trip in an area I grew up in, I got a good and solid iron signal and decided to dig. after about 20 cm into the soil appeared this beautiful object up. I saw quickly that it had to be an ax and a very old one. After further investigations and with contact with archaeologists, it confirmed to 800's. This is a real battle ax Viking period. Such findings are very exciting and the ax is delivered to Bergen Museum. Having the opportunity to hold a battle ax from this period makes me both proud and humble. Who knows what story this ax has, bloody? and that it has sailed around the world with its owner. Who was the owner, king, warrior, or an ordinary farmer?? Much remains to find out but using my detector then, we've started finding pieces of the puzzle. Archaeologists have also asked for help on the excavation areas if I can assist with the detector at grave sites. I said yes of course. Maybe the next big discovery in Viking period just been made with a Minelab detector? last picture shows the ax with x-ray photography.
