An unexpected Seated Dime

24 Aug 2015

One Morning before work I decided to stop at a small park close to my house before I had to go into work. The park is in a neighborhood that wasn't built until the 1920's so on any given day you can expect to find wheats and a Mercury dime or two. I had stopped at this park a day earlier before work as well and popped out a 1937 Mercury dime two wheats and some kind of clay marble.

So this particular day I decided to stop back in and try my luck in the area where a had dig the Mercury dime the day before, and boy was luck on my side. Within about 20 minutes boom, it hit! Solid 12:43 to 12:44 signal at 7 inches was screaming out of my Ctx 3030, after pinpointing I started digging. Flipped the plug out of the way and used my handheld pinpointer and found the target in the sidewall. I pushed some dirt out of the way to expose the reeds of a silver rim, "jackpot!" I yelled as I popped the coin out of the sidewall, leaving it in a coinball. As I held the coinball I figured I had just nailed another Mercury or a Rosie, boy was I wrong. I flicked some dirt out of the way to reveal the seated Liberty! I uttered a few profane words as I shot up from the ground to run to a nearby puddle of water to wash the coin off, as this was now a serious situation in my hands.

After submersing the Seated Dime into the puddle of water, I began dabbing gently at the little bit of dirt stuck to the dime, slowly washing it away with every dab, the date was revealed. 1854 with Arrows. My second seated coin ever, and it's a very fine 1854. After seeing that I was done detecting for the day, I ran home to give the dime a quick shot of electrolysis, and took many pictures to post on social media to show my friends. A great day for my Ctx, and me!
