1909 You’re So Fine

Hi, my name is Will, I live in northwest Iowa.  I’ve been hunting for about four years now and I have found some really cool things.  Nothing can compare to what I found on October 4, 2014, at least not yet.  I’m only about to get out to metal detect for a few hours a week.  Not as much as I’d like to though.  But when you have a wife and four kids at home that’s where most of your time is spent.  Here within the last 3 weeks I haven’t had much time to get out and dig.  If I did I wasn’t having much luck, that’s metal detecting for you, it has its ups and downs.  I’m sure all you fellow hunters out there can agree with that.

My buddy Tim from work got permission to metal detect his landlord’s property and invited me along to hunt it.  All week the anticipation was building as Saturday came, I kept thinking about what we might find on the property.  We left early Saturday morning, it was a very chilly and windy morning.  The temperature was only in the 40’s.  When we arrived at the property we noticed an empty lot down a few houses.  We agreed that we should hunt the property after we finished at the landlords, soon we started our hunt.  Tim started off strong, pulling out wheat penny after wheat penny.  I started off slowly, just a few wheat pennies nothing too special.  As we finished the landlord’s property I was feeling defeated.  No silver coins or anything too impressive.

We decided to venture to the empty lot a few houses down and try our luck there.  After a few minutes I dug up a 1964 silver dime and Kansas state sales tax token.  My luck was soon turning around.  Then I got a very strong signal on my Etrac.  I thought it would be an Indianhead or another wheat penny.  As I dug the hole I found the coin about 4 or 5 inches deep.  As I looked I realized it wasn’t an Indianhead, and was in fact a wheat penny.  As I cleaned it off to see the date, I was shocked to see it was a 1909 S! I yelled over to Tim telling him that it was a 1909 S, as my heart began to beat faster.  As he came over to look at the coin I had found we soon saw the VDB on the back.

We couldn’t believe that such a rare coin had been pulled out of this lot.  You can only imagine my reaction, it just goes to show that location and persistence pays off and you never know what you may find.  Keep your head up and keep digging my friends.  Happy hunting and good luck.  Special thanks to Minelab for my success story, hours of enjoyment, and especially for my oh so fine 1909.
