17th century coin out of the San Francisco Bay

25 Aug 2014

After  4 successful years of detecting with the E-TRAC, I finally purchased a CTX3030 about 3 months ago. With the CTX 3030, I’ve been able to detect deep silver coins, silver rings, a couple of deep gold rings, along with 3 other small pieces of gold jewelry.

The problem is, I was unable to detect any coins prior to 1900 with the CTX. This was a dilemma. The E-TRAC came thru time and time again at detecting 1800s coins, but not the CTX 3030. After 3 months, not a single coin detected was prior to 1900. Maybe I had a faulty detector?  LOL

On the last day at a San Francisco Bay site, I detected a Chinese coin, similar to one that I had detected a couple of years earlier with the E-TRAC at the same site. After some internet research, I discovered that it was minted from 1644-1661! My CTX appears to be working correctly now.  LOL

I got out my other Chinese coin from that site. Unfortunately, when I detected it a couple of years ago with the E-TRAC, I failed to find it in a couple of World Coin catalogs (1801-1900, 1901-2000). It was minted from 1662-1722! And I thought that my (very corroded) 1835 large cent was my oldest coin.

The bronze-colored coin on the right side is the CTX 3030 found coin. It was minted from 1644-1661 in Peking. Shunzhi III, Emperor of the Qing dynasty. Boo-Ciowan.

The corroded silver-colored coin on the left was the E-trac found coin.

It was minted from 1662-1722 in Peking. Sheng Tsu, Emperor of the Qing dynasty. Boo-Ciowan.

It’s interesting that these coins were found around 100m apart (and a couple of years).

The San Francisco Bay was discovered by Europeans (Spain) back in 1769, and both coins predate this discovery. If a Chinese ship made it into the bay prior to 1769, that would be very interesting. But there are many other possibilities as to why these relatively old coins were found at the same bay site.

As with the E-TRAC, I’m very pleased with the CTX 3030.
