The last week of October broke to warm temps, did some hunting on a site I had recently obtained permission. Monday and Tuesday were great Indians, barbers and a seated dime with the assorted clad and wheat pennies. Wednesday, a cold front came through with healthy rains.
Thursday back to the site and more finds but only one Barber dime the rest common and a old cosmetic compact. Looked it over and put it in the pouch.
Busy Friday and Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon I grabbed the pouch from the truck and showed my wife Jill, a playset cup but it was crushed beyond repair. I dug out the coins and the compact. Rinsed the coins and started a sonic bath.
Jill was fixing supper so I was next to her rinsing the compact. In the past I have found a coin inside of a compact, and Indian head penny and on another occasion a SLQ. I was trying to open the compact and after a long rinse I popped the small latch and shook it, told Jill there was something in it and she said just a broken mirror.
I pried lightly and it popped open and to my surprise gold showed through the mud and deteriorated powder puff, I started hooting and she said be quiet until I showed her which she started yelling NO WAY!
She grabbed the camera and shot the following pictures of a great condition 1907 D U.S. 5 dollar gold piece. We even dated the compact on line to 1928. It is by Mellow-Glo and it sold on ebay in much better shape for $15.00.
So you just never know what may come of a find or what may be in it.
