When you least expect it

13 Apr 2015

Having been on my own permission the day before and finding that most of the fields had been drilled I decided to enquire if their we're any places left on the club dig for the following morning, places are normally taken up rather quickly so I wasn't feeling optimistic, shortly after I received a message from Ian who runs the digs offering me a place, The following morning I set off, weather was OK slightly windy but that didn't put me off.. I arrived got set up and listened to the briefing regarding which fields were available etc, as usual we tend to split the fields up into morning session and afternoon session, nice to have a fresh field after lunch.

The morning went OK, old lead token, thimble and the usual button or two, I personally was looking forward to the afternoon as I'd heard one or two people talking of the other fields giving out one or two roman in the past. I've never had a roman coin yet, brooches yes but never a coin, so after dinner I set of for the roman field, at the side of me was a lad I'd been chatting to during the morning and I said as I was entering the field "Keiron I'm not going home until I find a roman coin". I walked 10 yards and got an excellent signal, here goes I thought and dug it, a small copper washer. Determined to bag myself a roman coin I carried on, must have only been 5 mins and got another signal, what was about to happen was far from what I was expecting "my god" I shouted to Keiron, "you got a roman" he replied and when I told him I've just dug a gold hammered up his reply was "Yeh Yeh what you found really" I ran over to him holding this hammered personally I don't know what was shining more the coin or my teeth behind the world's biggest grin.

We marked the area off and detected every inch hoping to find a scattered hoard of gold hammereds.

The rest of the day was spent showing my find off and honestly not much more detecting was done after that. Well I drove home later that day still with that big grin on my face and probably so did the farmer.
