On the Saturday myself and my friend decided to hunt on new permission not knowing what to find. After very few signals we both discovered traces of Victorian and Edward occupation with my friend getting the Pennies and myself getting the Halfpenny's. Nothing much happened for the next hour or so until my friend came rushing from the joining field shouting for me to come. I rushed to his spot and there was the biggest, ugliest Gold wedding ring I had ever saw. Weighing in at 14 grams and dated c1845 it was the first Gold that we had discovered since starting metal detecting and both using our trusted X-Terra 705's. I was over the moon for my mate who had only started detecting within the past few months. He had got Gold and it would probably be the first and last for either of us.
A few days later I had a day off work and decided to go out for a hunt by myself in order to get another "fix". Thinking about my friend's Gold a few days previous I was hopeful on getting something good myself.
Second signal and boom. That clear sharp signal of silver was buzzing in my ears. I decided to dig the plug and low and behold I saw a glint of silver. I quickly decided to record my find as I normally do and didn't expect too much. As I slowly unearthed the find I started to tremble. It was silver, and it was old. Unlike other old silver I had found before this coin was to have markings, markings which I could identify some sort of date. Low and behold it was to be a 1567 Elizabeth I silver hammered sixpence. My first truly hammered coin and the oldest one at that. I was shaking and so excited that I nearly forgot I was on camera too. It just goes to show that over the year or so detecting with the trusted Minelab machine you never know what you are going to find, and yes, dreams can come true. thank you Minelab for making 2 middle aged men happy in the space of a few days.
