Treasure Isn’t Always in the Ground

13 Sep 2011

I took my first-ever metal detecting trip to a local beach to test out my new E-TRAC and learn its features. I enjoyed a very successful day of discovering the E-TRAC's powerful capabilities and found ten clad coins (most over 6” deep). Toward the end of the day a mother and her two children approached me and asked if I could please help them find a silver charm they had lost about an hour earlier. I agreed and the mother relayed what had happened as we walked to their site. Her seven year old daughter had been given a small silver charm by her best friend but it fell off her chain into the water. The family looked for it but couldn’t find it. The daughter was upset she’d lost it and the mother felt terrible because she thought she put the charm securely on the chain. I went out and started a pattern to detect the area and after 20 minutes got a clear high tone in about 18” of water. We couldn’t see the bottom so I used the E-TRAC's Pinpoint feature to show the mother exactly where to dig. I asked her to dig the wet sand and throw it onto the shore while I checked after every few scoops to see if the target was still present. After a few scoops, the tone disappeared. I told her I think she got it and when we looked on shore, we saw the tiny charm shining in the sand! They thanked me repeatedly and I was happy I was able to use my new hobby to help solve someone’s problem. The daughter’s joy and her mother’s relief and gratitude were all the treasure I needed that day. John Leitch - Maryland, USA
