The Horn Book

16 Apr 2015

It was a few weeks since I had been and on this particular day the sun was out which we have been a bit short off lately, I thought it would be great to get out with the E-TRAC and maybe it would be my lucky day and I just love that exciting feeling you get with the thought of what that next beeps and digging that hole will bring, I think all the guys in this great hobby will know that feeling. I had been detecting on my field for about half and had already got a nice Henry 111 cut half and still smiling to myself when I got a clear nice tone in my headphones, I started digging my hole and all the time thinking this is what it’s all about, I dug to around 11inches when at the bottom of the hole I could see a peace of what looked like lead I slowly dug carefully as not to damage it and finally removed it.

As I cleaned the soil from it I could see what appeared to be the alphabet and it seemed to be complete with a lovely pattern also on the back. Whilst driving home I was thinking I’ve never seen anything like it before and I was trying to come up with every possibility what it had been used for, I knew that once I get home I would be able to get on the Internet and seek an identification from a great group on Metal Detecting Uk which is a great friendly site with great people or are really helpful. Within minutes of putting up for identification I got a id and was told it was a Horn Book and used to be a teaching aid and it was dated 1681 and the best condition they have seen. So I thought I would send pictures to Peter from the magazine The Searcher and got some great information back also that it’s the best he had seen and the first one they had seen with the date on. My E-TRAC seems to never stop amazing me and brings me hours of great excitement and all I can say is a Great Thanks to the guys at Minelab for a great Machine.
