Medieval lead finds on our charity rally

17 Sep 2017

A much anticipated charity rally had come around again searching on parkland belonging to a fortified manor house dating to the 14 century. After the usual rules and sitemap notes , I set up my Minelab X-TERRA 705 , using the standard dd coil, and around 45 people set of in hope of finding some uncovered treasures within the 150 acres of pasture and stubble we had permission to be on . My first signal was a 1936 half penny of King Edward. This was followed by a great medieval find of a lead spindle whorl used in the production of yarns and was greatly detailed. The usual pieces of lead copper and bronze scrap followed so we moved onto another field where I received a great signal which turned out to be a silver shilling of George III, my first ever silver Georgian coin.

After lunch I detected a pasture field without luck so moved onto a wheat stubble field, after ground balancing my Minelab X-TERRA 705 again I set of in hope . After only a short period I had a loud shallow signal that I knew was lead from the read out on my vdi. Digging down only 4 inches I discovered a medieval pilgrims ampule dating roughly from the 13th to 15 th century. These were bought from holy shrines and filled with holy water to bless the fields for good crops in the coming harvest.

My other finds from that day included musket balls, a small lead weight ,a bronze ring and a lovely little 14 century buckle .
