Half a yard......

07 Oct 2016

After getting a detector again after a 7 year layoff, I was bitten by the bug again. Mum said she would ask a contact of hers if we (me and my mate Ash) could detect on their land as I was struggling to get permissions of my own, we do go on organised digs to keep up though. Anyway mums friends said yes and a suitable time to make our first visit was arranged. We arrived on the farm, a Castle to our left, Norman Church up on the hill and the fields rolling as far as the eye could see. We made our introductions and the land owner took us for a tour in his 4x4, right, we have this one, that one, the two over there, he opened a gate, this one, one up here and two beyond that.  We got out and looked over the landscape, two over there and this down here. We got back in the vehicle, as we drove back to the gate, some silver coins were found in this part of this field. With his words ringing in our ears we decided we would begin in the silver coin field. We drove up to the gate in Ash's car, though it being a little sporty job that was as far as it went.  We set up our E-TRACs, standard coils and wide open full sensitivity. Through the gate and onto the cobble track, let's noise cancel and start I said, we chatted and looked around as the machines did their thing, then we were ready. Gog phones on and swing, bzzzzz bzzzzz first signal without taking a step, quick circular plug cut to discover a .22 brass casing. Oh well looks like it's gonna be one of THEM days I though as I replaced the turf plug. A half step forward as I brushed the coil over the damp grass, zzzzzzz zzzzzzzz another fuzzy tone, pinpointed and a circle cut I lifted out the plug. I couldn't see anything so another little spade full, FLASH OF YELLOW, nah it's pie foil I thought, I grabbed a handful of soil and let it sieve through my fingers, YELLOW, foil I thought again, hang on it's patterned, could it be.............. I looked over at Ash, he was 8-10 yards away busy digging his own signal, gog phones off and placed on the E-TRAC now resting on my spade. I walked over to Ash, wot ya got? He asked. Hold out your hand I said. I let the find fall into his open hand.  I still hadn't convinced myself of what it was. GOLD!! - He said, Yeah I thought it was pie foil, we laughed. What sort of signal did it give? - he asked. I don't remember- I said, but we have 131 acres to look in, if this is in the first half a yard, what else is here waiting to be found.
