Finding Love in the Emerald Isle

12 Jun 2014

It was a wet day and while sitting in the car I did not know if I would get the chance to detect without getting soaked. I had only been detecting for a few months and had been out on 6 occasions. While waiting patiently for the rain to clear I was thinking about my last hunt where I had found my second ever coin and my first ever musketball.

I couldn't wait to get my trusted X-TERRA 705 out of the boot of the car and get cracking with a new hunt. After about 40 minutes the sky started to clear and it was time to get started.

I decided to stay in the field where I had been lucky previously despite the grass being long. Thankfully I did stay as the long grass proved to be no problem for the X Terra 705 and the finds started to come. Large flat buttons started to be found which is always great as they are all almost 200 years old. Halfway through my hunt I got a cracker signal in the mid 30's and thought this was either going to be a coin or a button. Without a pin pointer I was still easily able to locate what bit of soil the target was in. I slowly revealed the item to a flash of light shining off it. What was it? I didn't know if it was a coin or a button, I had never seen anything like it.

As you can see from the video clip I didn't get too excited as I was afraid to be let down to discover it to be a piece of aluminium. I carried on my hunt finding more buttons and my first Irish coin.

The rain reappeared and I had to get home. I did a roundup of the items for Youtube and had a rest.

To my surprise I started to get comments from detectorist friends to congratulate me in finding not only my first silver find but a Love Token, probably over 300 years old. I was shocked and surprised that this item had been affectionately rubbed down and bent into an S shape by some man to give to his lover as a sign of affection many years ago and now it was in my hand.

That is one reason I love this hobby, to find history, not for profit, but to relive the past. I have now passed on this token of love to my own wife and hope she takes better care of it. Like the song goes, Love is all around. :-)
