Find of a Lifetime

01 May 2012

To my surprise I found through research an old homesite on my families farm from the 1880's. There was no sign of the homestead and we never knew it existed even though we lived there for over a decade. I got permission from the current owner and quickly with my son and friend Bryon off we went. Bryon found an indian head penny lying on the ground. I found an 1856 large cent minutes later. Next to the large cent I got a strong signal. Too big for a coin, I figured it would be an interesting relic at best. I called Bryon over to help me dig it up and to our surprise it was a pre-civil war "OVM" belt buckle. "Ohio Volunteer Militia". I didn't know the significance of the find, but Bryon quickly filled me in that it was a find of a lifetime as he inspected it with shaking hands. Thanks Minelab for making such an awesome machine. I've been offered $800.00 for the buckle so far, but will keep it in my collection. Finding coins is always a great thing, but a relic such as the buckle really connects you with the history of the area. Joel Shappell - Indiana, USA
