Exploring New Horizons

08 Dec 2011

My wife Jan and I decided to have a vacation recently in Europe so as to catch up with family. Therefore we eagerly packed our bags - especially my metal detector the trusty Minelab Explorer XS. The Explorer XS is now over five years old and I can say that it has been absolutely magnificant ( I have owned Minelab equipment since the 1990's). Destination Northern Eastern Poland So we departed from Sydney on a Qantas flight to Poland in June this year having had Customs Officers showing real curiosity as to my metal detecting hobby. In fact an Officer remarked that I had "better equipment than we do". The flight was smooth all the way and after 26 or so hours we finally arrived in Poland, weary but glad to have reached our destination. We lived mainly with Jan's family who live not far from the great lakes (Mazury) in North eastern Poland and near the river Pisa and surrounded by pine forests, dairy and agricultural farms. As can be seen from Figure 1 it is a very picturesque area. The river runs near to the family home and from the local history I gathered that the river was the border between and during the last great wars, ( have also recovered many items from this period). Judging by my discoveries in this area it once must have been a travelling route for hundreds of years, and around about that time from what the family has told me that there were water mills operating in the area and that their distant relatives owned them. It was here to I also in this area found many artifacts from WW1 and WW2 bullet cartridges buttons and Russian and German coins, however this time I shall deal mainly with the finds of coins dating back to the 15th century and various other exciting discoveries.
